EMPOWERING 2000 FARMERS IN TUMU

Through our projects, we empower farmers and communities to foster a better, more sustainable business and lifestyle.

Superior Raceways Systems Limited is empowering 2,000 Farmers in Tumu in the Upper West Region of Ghana to grow fish, then solar-pump the fish waste-water for irrigated organic soybeans and maize farming throughout the year. Farmers in Tumu will now have the opportunity to also grow crops under irrigation during the dry season. The project was initiated by the Business Resource Centre at Tumu in the Upper West Region of Ghana.

Under the project, 2,000 farmers in the project catchment area are being provided with solar powered boreholes. The solar power boreholes are the life wires of the project. The project is self-funding.

A credit union is being organized for the 2,000 farmers with cash contributions from the members. The credit union can then offer soft loans to their members to procure their solar powered boreholes, superior fishpond raceways and smart irrigation systems. The project implementation begins with Superior Raceways supplying a deep well digging machine at a cost of $200,000. Farmers in the Supply Chain will have their boreholes dug at a cost of about Ghc 7,000 each, instead of the prevailing rates of Ghc 12,000 to Ghc 15,000 in Tumu.

The 2,000 farmers in Tumu are being empowered to grow catfish and tilapia in superior raceway fish tanks throughout the year. Waste-waters from the superior raceway fish tanks will be solar pumped for irrigated maize and soybeans farming during the dry season. Some farmers will also grow organic vegetables, plantains, pawpaw and mangoes under irrigation throughout the year. These farmers will use fast-growth seeds supplied by Superior Raceways.

Payback Period

The farmers will be capable of paying back the money spent on procuring their solar boreholes, superior raceway fish tanks and smart irrigation within twelve months.

BUY-BACK SCHEME

The catfish, tilapia, soybeans and maize produced by the farmers will be purchased by Superior Raceway Systems Limited for processing and export.
